Physics Answer Questions

Newton's Second Law Problem

  • Q :  A small button placed on a spinning platform moves with the platform without slipping, and the coefficient of static friction is ms = 0.3 between the button and the platform. If the frequency of the platform’s rotation is 0.5 rev/s, find the maximum distance R from the center that will prevent the button from sliding outward. R =.....?
  • A : For the button to remain without slipping, we should have m R w2 = ms m g , so that R = ms g / m w2 = 0.3 x 9.8 / ( 0.5 x 2 p )2 = 0.294 m = 29.4 cm.
