Difference between Symbols, Metaphors, and Analogies?

Problem
I have the dictionary definitions; but to me they are all still the same or related :-(
Does anyone have a simple idiots way to distinguish them and remember the specific differences between these?

Solution
  1. A symbol is used to represent something else; dark sky, moon and stars = night.
    Keys to represent ownership; Handcuffs meaning 'prisoner'.
  2. Metaphor is a literary device which compares two unlike things.eg;
    'He was a lion in the fight'.
  3. Analogy is another figure of speech which says that one thing IS another.
    Mary's house was lit up like a Christmas tree in full glow.

    To round it off for you.
    A simile is also a comparison between two unlike thing using 'like.'
    'He swims like a fish'.
